During the General Assembly of the Iberic-American Center CIDEU, two announcements were made, the first of which was that the city of Zaragoza will preside over the assembly of the Iberoamerican Center for Urban Strategic Development; the second was the appointment of Bogotá as the new vice-president of the governing council for the period 2020-2022 and president for the period 2022-2024.

Regarding this appointment, the mayor of Bogotá, Claudia López, pointed out that, "This year is very important, and in this time of pandemic, of economic crisis, it is crucial to plan our cities to face the challenges of the 21st century".

The Mayor added that, “Bogotá has been a founding member of CIDEU since 1993. We have participated in many of its activities; strategic planning is at the heart of our city".

Throughout the meeting, Secretary General Laura Pérez spoke about the projects that have been carried out during the year. After this intervention, the general director Rosa Arlene María took the floor and made a presentation of the new budget that will be invested in projects such as the innovative practices workshop, where technical cooperation will be offered among the member cities.

In her turn, Luz Amparo Medina, director of international relations for the district of Bogotá thanked all the CIDEU members and highlighted the importance of urban planning to face the challenges of the pandemic, “The current crisis generated by COVID-19 has made us rethink our cities, it has shown us the need to address contemporary urban development challenges from new approaches. For this reason, we must carry out policy and public philosophy innovations that mark this new course for our cities. This appointment supports the international positioning of Bogotá”.

At the end of the event, the heads of territorial networks were appointed for the next two years: for the Southern Cone, Buenos Aires; for Europe, Zaragoza and representing Central America, Mexico.

CIDEU's mission is to accompany the Iberic-American local governments to apply the culture of urban strategic thinking in the design and management of projects aligned to a strategy, to achieve sustainable and inclusive cities.

According to Luz Amparo Medina, CIDEU is a valuable ally for its contribution to urban transformation and the promotion of the culture of urban strategic thinking; basic issues in the construction of sustainable cities.
