The Mayor of Bogotá, Claudia Lopez, participated in the XXV Annual Congress of the Ibero-American Center for Urban Strategic Development (CIDEU), held in the city of Mendoza (Argentina). The Mayor led the meeting as president of the organization, a position that the Colombian capital will hold until next year.

This congress was a meeting with governors, city representatives, and leaders from all over the region, to learn about the response that local governments are giving to challenges such as climate change, identify common strategies and build, through collaborative action and the exchange of experiences, a strategy with general guidelines for climate planning and management, to serve as a guide for Ibero-American cities.

"CIDEU is a network of cities where we learn and do things together. It is not a network for philosophizing. As presidents of this network, from Bogotá, we have worked around the care of people, especially women who have an overload of unpaid work that impoverishes societies and democracy," said the mayor, Claudia Lopez.

During the congress, Bogotá shared successful experiences with the participants, such as its Care System and its Climate Action Plan, strategies that include two fundamental pillars of the vision of the Colombian capital: Caring for people and the planet.

Regarding the System of Care, Bogotá's Mayor highlighted its territorialization component, which allows responding to the needs of women and caregivers in Bogotá with a proximity criterion, thanks to the fact that it provides access to services without having to walk for more than 20 minutes.

During her intervention in the dialogue of Mayors, in a space called "Our commitment to climate change", the mayor presented to her interlocutors an overview of the policies and actions that her administration has been carrying out to face the challenge of climate change in Bogotá.

"Because a safe city, especially for women, is not a city behind bars but an active city, with commerce in sight, with green space and social housing, and that is why we have delimited environmentally protected land. We have decided to set aside land for the green industry. To those who wanted to continue degrading the ecological and environmental space to the north of the city, we said, you will not be able to do that development, what we offer is a compensation mechanism", explained the Mayor.

It is worth remembering that Bogotá hosted the congress in July 2022. On that occasion, it received more than 120 delegates and representatives of local governments, being also the first time that an event of such magnitude was held in face-to-face mode after the pandemic.

The agenda of activities scheduled in Argentina included technical visits to projects with diverse urban and climatic dynamics, in order to understand the efforts Mendoza is making to move towards a balanced, continuous and diverse territory. Planning for socially equitable, economically active and environmentally sustainable urban development plays an important role here.

Claudia López also participated in the General Assembly of CIDEU, leading the annual debate in a space to approve the management and outline the work plan of this network for the short and medium term.

Finally, the Mayor of Bogotá held a bilateral meeting with Claudio Orrego,Governor of the Metropolitan Region of Santiago de Chile, to identify potential areas of technical cooperation and share the successes and challenges facing the Care System, as well as the best for sustainable mobility and innovation.
