The Secretariat of Culture, Recreation and Sport (SCRD) will take part in this year’s edition of the IV United Cities and Local Government (UCLG) Culture Summit, which will be held in Izmir, Turkey this year. An event of this scale will offer a platform for various different minds to come together in a way that promotes international debates on culture, cities, well-being and sustainable development.  At the heart of the discussion will be the vision shaped by the UN 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Bogotá Secretary of Culture, Recreation and Sports, Nicolás Montero will join Tita Larasiti from the Indonesian Creative Cities Network; Director of Cultural and Social Affairs of Ramallah, Sally Abu Bakr; Music Diplomacy Director, Shain Shapiro; and Cangul Kus from Izmir. The panel will discuss “Cultural Diversity In The Creative Economy” and will be held on September 9th.

Next, a tweet from the Ministry of Culture inviting citizens to sign up for the 'Culture Defines the Future' Summit.

Secretary Montero specified that “cultural diversity is the fabric of our relationships, it is there where we find better ways of being together, where we can imagine other possible realities through creation. That is why it’s so important to strengthen the creative and cultural industries as a process of economic re-activation, not only in the city, but for the entire country. The development of creative artistic activities will seek to generate positive impacts on the community with the added benefit of creating more jobs in territories that direly need them.”

In its fourth edition, the Summit will reinforce the importance of the role of culture in sustainable development at the local level with concrete practices, programs and projects on an international scale.

Likewise, it will be accompanied by further sessions in the same mood as the main ones. Proceedings are expected to last for three days and will bring together local and international delegations, government representatives, international and non-governmental organisations from around the world.

History of UCLG

Since 2015, UCLG has organised three editions of the Culture Summit, which were held in the city of Bilbao (Basque Country, Spain, March 2015), in the Special Autonomous Province of Jeju (Jeju-do, Republic of Korea, May 2017) and in the City of Buenos Aires (Argentina, April 2019). Given the success of the last three Summits, and taking into account the growing importance that culture is achieving within the framework of sustainable cities, the Executive Bureau decided to convene the 2021 UCLG Culture Summit in Izmir, Turkey.
