It was an eventful start to the World Water Week, as the Bogotá Public Space Ombudsman's Office - DADEP, oversaw a panel on public toilets in Latin America. A progress report was given on the progress that has been made in terms of the installations of public toilets being carried out in public parking lots near TransMilenio stations in Bogotá.

A broad-ranging, new proposal has been tabled on behalf of the Inter-American Development Bank and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation. Organised by the Stockholm International Water Institute, the event will count on Brazil, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Colombia to share their experiences in a panel called “Public toilets, understanding needs beyond home.”

In this year’s edition of the World Water Week, the Bogotá Public Space Ombudsman's Office presented a model that relies on civic culture and keeps in mind the commercial lay-out to bring three new modules of toilets to the public. Proposals like this are made possible by the International Water Institute Stockholm, the Inter-American Development Bank and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.

The Bogotá Public Space Ombudsman's Office explained how, since the beginning of this year, steps have been taken in the implementation of a pilot project to install three public toilets in city car-parks. The point of which is to study any and all feedback to determine the feasibility of extending this initiative to different localities. The first module was installed in San Andresito on 38th, with the next module to be installed in Alhambra and Santa Bárbara in the weeks to come.

“It is important for us to have an impact on Bogotá, since the start of the pilot, nearly 3,000 people have used the service as part of the citizen culture campaign that promotes the proper use and care of these installations." Stated DADEP Director Alejandra Rodríguez Cortés. "Our infrastructure must be close to the Integrated Public Transport System, it must have a high volume of foot-traffic and most importantly, it must have provisioning equipment on a metropolitan scale. We are guaranteeing universal access." The director went on to say.

World Water Week, led by the Stockholm International Water Institute, promotes the protection, management and efficient use of water in all its forms on an environmentally sustainable basis.
