The Deputy Director of Mayor’s office for International Relations, Andrea Laverde, participated in the international forum 'The role of the arts, culture and heritage in the sustainable development of climate resilience', convened on behalf of the UCLG network - Cities and United Local Governments and the Climate Heritage Network with the support of the British Council.

The objective of this meeting was to document and make evident the initiatives of cities and local governments from all across the continents regarding cultural policies, sustainable cities and climate-resistant development. In addition, it is worth noting that cultural players are key for Climate Action to be the main theme at COP26, which was held in Glasgow, Scotland.

In her speech, Deputy Director Laverde explained the cultural strategies that were being developed in Bogotá to support the response to climate change, “We are reconciling nature and culture from a systemic perspective, in which we are all part of the same system, emphasizing care as fundamental tenet of our management and empowering citizens to become agents of change, through knowledge and experience.”

Deputy Director Laverde then went on to state that through sustainable planning, "Bogotá is becoming greener and changing its outlook, with tools at our disposal such as the Land Use Plan, the Climate Action Plan and the Special Plan for the Management and Protection of the Historic Center; we are leaving behind the concept of a gray city, to become a nurturing and green city. This is done by focusing on how to mitigate and adapt to climate change.”

Within the framework of COP26 and with the support of the city of Bogotá, those involved in the arts, culture and heritage are sought after to undertake climate actions through media/communication. Thus, setting an example to follow, inspiring and helping the public to change their own behavior and insist on policy that tackles the issue of climate change at the local, national and global level.
