The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) singled out the city of Bogotá and four others for their innovative measures to reduce air-pollution.

UNEP praised Bogotá took advantage of the pandemic and saw it as a window of opportunity to improve its air-quality. A spokes-person commented that, “with the start of quarantines due to COVID-19, Bogotá, like other cities, registered a great decrease in air pollution. Encouraged by this, the city has launched a series of initiatives to try to permanently clean up its transport sector.”

The United Nations Environment Program also underlined the proposal put forward by Mayor Claudia López, which consists of the Strategic Plan for the Comprehensive Management of Air Quality in Bogotá. Mayor López then went on to say, “we’re going to take advantage of this turn of events, the pandemic has allowed us to move ‘cleaner air and eco-friendly transportation’ up on the agenda.”

The four other cities to receive praise from UNEP for their efforts in the fight for decontamination; to Paris for implementing a ban on the entry of polluting vehicles into downtown; Seoul, for planting trees along its riverbanks; New York, for promoting congestion reduction by charging an additional charge for using vehicles in certain areas; and Accra which is in an intensive process of making the switch from charcoal stoves to ones that use gas or electricity.

UNEP points out that the actions implemented in these five cities are a great contribution to decontamination, and many of these initiatives can be replicated in other cities.
