Bogotá Mayor, Claudia López participated in ‘Ideas Camp,’ a virtual event held on behalf of Bloomberg Philanthropies. The event seeks to accomplish the objectives set down by the Global Mayors Challenge 2021, to this effect, care programs like the “Door-to-Door Care Service.” With the aid of Bloomberg Philanthropies, strategies like this can take root.

Ideas Camp is an event held by the Global Mayors Challenge, in which a total of 50 cities are selected whose objective is to troubleshoot each other’s ideas. By presenting their strategies to other mayoral offices around the world, immediate feedback is given by world-class experts that can broaden the horizon of any single idea. Bogota has been chosen to participate in this momentous event where it will be challenged and presented by bold and innovative strategies.

The organizers began the virtual conference by providing the teams with several useful tips that might improve their overall performance. The criteria for the winning projects are as follows: the strategy must have media coverage, prototypes, a high level of participation by the public and, above all, it must be highly replicable.

According to Mayor López, “These types of challenges are the perfect opportunity for innovation. Local governments have constrained budgets that increase the risk of failure and discourage innovation. International cooperation allows us to move forward with these transformative ideas.”

At the roundtable, the 50 finalist cities sat down to exchange ideas. On behalf of Bogotá, was Mayor Claudia López, accompanied by the Secretary for Women, Diana Rodríguez and the District Care System team comprised of Under-Secretary for Woman, Diana Parra; head of the District Care System, Natalia Moreno; head of the “Door to Door Care Service” program, Ana María Granada; and María Paula Matiz, liaison to the Ministry of Health.

The “Door-to-Door Care Service” program seeks to bring the services of the District Care System in direct contact with the people who require them, since about 14% of full-time caregivers cannot access the mobile units, due to the conditions of the very people they care for.

The “Door-to-Door Care Service” seeks to further facilitate access to the District Care System. With the 6 care centers, including the one inaugurated today in the locality of Kennedy. These centers will be only 20-minutes away on-foot from any point,” explained the Secretary Diana Rodríguez during her pitch.

Regarding the strategy, Secretary Rodriguez went on to say that the “Door-to-Door Care Service will become a household name for those who depend on specialised care. This strategy provides attention to those who need it and frees up the time of those impromptu caregivers to pursue self-development, education and well-being.”

According to Secretary Rodríguez, one of the main objectives of the District Care System is to achieve a true cultural transformation. “To that end we need to provide care education for men as well, we hold workshops with the whole family, where we creatively explain that the role of caregiver is not exclusive to women.” T This work is carried out through the dissemination of a central message: “We can learn to care for others and specially for those who care for us”.

As the 2021 Global Mayors Challenge progresses, from a total of 631 cities submitted their proposals of which 50 finalists were chosen. In the latter stages of the event 15 cities will pass on to the final round where they will receive a $1 million dollar incentive on behalf of Bloomberg Philanthropies to put their innovative ideas into practice.
