A recent study by insurance company InsureandGo placed Bogotá at the top of its global ranking of the world’s most “authentic” travel destinations, based on thousands of Google Maps reviews across more than 140 cities.

The study tracked how often travelers used words like “authentic,” “local,” and “traditional” in reviews of restaurants, markets, cultural spaces, and tourist attractions.

Bogotá scored a perfect 100 on the Authenticity Index, standing well ahead of cities such as Lima, Taipei, Muscat, Quito, Valparaíso, and Rio de Janeiro.

For travelers, Bogotá’s authenticity comes through in its vibrant food scene, the street art that runs through its neighborhoods, and its deep ties to history and Indigenous cultures—elements that create real, grounded experiences far from the clichés of traditional tourism.

Landmarks that define the experience

Among the places visitors highlight most are Monserrate, known for its sweeping views of the city; the historic district of La Candelaria, rich in heritage and character; and the Gold Museum, home to one of the world’s most important collections of pre-Hispanic goldwork.

“This recognition confirms that Bogotá is a city travelers experience in a truly authentic way. Here, visitors discover culture, history, gastronomy, nature, and, above all, the warmth of its people. We will continue to strengthen a diverse, sustainable, and innovative tourism sector so that every visitor feels at home in Bogotá,” said Ángela Garzón, Director of the Bogotá Tourism Institute (IDT).

This milestone adds to Bogotás growing international recognition. In World’s Best Cities 2026, by Resonance Consultancy, the city ranks 51st among the best places in the world to visit.

According to the Bogotá Tourism Observatory (IDT), international visitors primarily travel to the city for: Leisure and holidays, visiting friends and family and business and professional travel.

During their stay, visitors most often highlight gastronomy, cultural experiences, and religious, historical, and architectural attractions, followed by activities related to wellness and nature.

Tourism that reflects identity—and drives the economy

The Tourism Observatory identifies Monserrate, La Candelaria, and Chorro de Quevedo as the most visited sites among international travelers—iconic places that reflect the city’s history, culture, and identity. These findings align with InsureandGo’s analysis, reinforcing their appeal as authentic, experience-rich destinations.

Tourism also plays a key role in Bogotá’s economy. On average, international visitors spend around $100 USD per day, supporting local businesses and creating opportunities for entrepreneurs, workers, and the broader cultural sector.

With growing global recognition and increasing interest from travelers around the world, Bogotá continues to position itself as a leading destination in Latin America—one that blends authenticity, culture, and truly unique experiences.
