The Dubai Excellence Program and the Global Innovation Management Institute have recently confirmed Carolina Durán, Secretary of Economic Development, as one of the five funding members of the Global Council of Innovative Entities (GCIE).

With this appointment, Mrs. Durán becomes the only representative of this important Council in South America. The Council is part of a larger network of entities that foster innovation at the highest level to address the most important problems and issues of society.

The Global Innovation Management Institute, founded in 2009, is the largest organization of professionals, academics and leaders in innovation in the World. Its main focus is to promote innovation in businesses and it annually organizes the World Summit of Innovation.

“This is a recognition to all the work done by the Secretary of Economic Development and the Mayor’s Office to overcome the crisis derived by the pandemic and also help the digital transformation and innovation among entrepreneurs and their businesses” said Mrs. Durán about her appointment in the Council, as she ratified the portfolio of programs and policies deployed in the city to support any type of businesses.

To belong to this global organism will allow Bogotá to access a wide array of networks to exchange experiences in innovation to help foster the city’s growth and to solidify it as the capital of entrepreneurship and innovation in the region.

The GCIE promotes research regarding societies’ main issues and its possible solutions as it emboldens excellence through the identification of elements that contribute to a global index that can help identify the most innovative cities in the world.

As told by the GCIE, Mrs. Durán’s appointment is a recognition to the social impact of the initiatives developed and their strong linkage to innovation. “The Founding Members need solid and tested frameworks that use innovation in their fields” said the GCIE.

The first virtual meeting of the Founding Members is set to be August the 31st and the official announcement of Mrs. Duran’s appointment will be done at ExpoDubai, the first grand global fair that will take place post-pandemic.

Who will be part of the Council?

The other four Founding Members are:

  • Batabunde Akindele (North America), leader in global networking strategies and technology at Verizon.
  • Jemma Iles (Oceania), awarded for her work in transforming the public sector through innovation in Cockburn, Australia.
  • Josep M. Pique (Europe), director of innovation and internationalization at La Salle URL University and President of Technova in Barcelona; one of the main innovation accelerators in Europe.
