Bogotá wins STA Sustainable Transportation award for promoting clean mobility

Bogotá is the winner of the Sustainable Transport Award (STA) 2022, the announcement was made during the closing of the Mobilize virtual summit, of the Institute of Transportation and Development Policies (ITDP), which highlights the Colombian capital for, “Its timely response to the need to decongest public transport and prevent the spread of COVID-19 ". 

Of the 31 cities nominated for the award, the ITDP selected Bogotá as the winner specifically for several of its sustainable mobility initiatives, including the implementation of temporary bike paths during the pandemic; the inclusion of electric buses in the fleet of the public transport system; the promotion of the carpooling; and sustainable and safe school mobility programs, among other projects. 

It also highlights the decision of Bogotá to include electric vehicles in the city's public transport system, linking up to now 350 buses, of the 1,485 that are planned in total.

In terms of private transport, the ITDP highlights the exemption of the peak and plate measure for those who travel in a shared car with three or more occupants, a program with which it is planned to reduce trips by private vehicle by 2 million weekly kilometers and recognized the Al Colegio en Bici y Ciempiés projects, which benefit more than 6,000 girls, boys and adolescents with guided caravans every day so that they can safely go to their schools, by bike or on foot. 

The 2022 version of the award gave Honorable Mention to the cities of Peshawa, Pakistan for reducing travel time and costs; and to Tartu, Estonia for the implementation of a shared bike system. In 2021 the award was presented to the city of Jakarta, Indonesia for its transition to a multimodal transportation system that prioritized cycling.
